Qi Baishi adopted a playful style with his paintings, balancing two objectives; that of achieving an exact likeness and that of applying his own individual artistic license. Whilst he maintained his own style, he was definitely from the Chinese tradition and therefore was not influenced by any Western artists. He applied his own unique method, derived from the precedents of the traditional Chinese artistic tradition that he was born into.
He stated “When speaking, use language that people can understand. When painting, depict things that people have seen”.
Within his native China, Qi Baishi is an esteemed and very famous artist. His works are still highly prized today, despite his death some sixty years ago, in 1957. On 25 th February 2010 the British newspaper, the Daily Telegraph reported that he had become the world’s third best-ever selling artist, behind Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso.
